2013 is underway and many of those who are planning
to redecorate their homes this year will already be looking for inspiration.
The trends that will be taking over living rooms across the country are a
steady development on last year’s, and will see nature, Victoriana and lace
become huge focal points in interior design. However, there are those who wish
to redecorate who have purchased expensive and long-lasting items of furniture
such as sofas, cabinets and pop up TV
cabinets. This guide runs down the themes that will be on trend this year
and discusses how the smallest changes can make a room hit all the right notes
without making wholesale furniture changes.
Retro
Botanicals
The 1950s have been huge for some time in interior
design, and the plant-inspired patterns that have governed the last few years
in many living areas are not fading anytime fast. Vintage-inspired wallpapers
in blues and yellows make this kitsch and cool look really pop, though going
overboard with pattern can make the room seem too busy and cluttered. Choosing
a feature wall and covering it with patterned wallpaper is enough to add a 50s
edge to a living room, and the look works best with dark wood for tables and motorized TV cabinets,
and plain upholstery such as leather or suede. If the basics and foundations of
the room are plain, they can always be altered by using patterned cushions,
curtains and other fabrics.
Forestry
In a different spin on the natural theme, a darker,
more ‘foresty’ theme is becoming more and more popular this year. Exposed wood
beam in houses definitely contribute to this look, with chunky rustic furniture
and neutral walls. This look is perfect for the dark-wood and more modern TV lift cabinets, as
they give an earthy feel that is greatly complemented by deep purples, greens
and browns. Even the addition of burning incense or candles can add a more
natural and forest-like feel to a room.
Lovely
in Lace
Lace has proved a hit on many catwalks for the past
few years, with designers adoring the luxury material. Now it has come to the
home, and because of its delicate and relatively small composition, it is easy
to add a lacy edge to a room. The main elements of this look are in the detail;
lace-trimmed cushions, lace films over windows, candles with lace holders or
even, if extravagance is the key, a huge rug with a lace design. Existing
furniture need not even be altered for this look; the traditional pop up TV cabinets
with their ornate carvings and authentic wood grains look perfect with this
trend, and the whole look will add a certain sense of ladylike delicacy to any
space.
